Some Figures on SRS, - Concerning Female to Male (FtM) at the GLA meeting in London – 2007-05-02 Dated 02/05/2007 - Concerning Female to Male
From Dr Stuart Lorimer's presentation: At the moment, CHX have 2000 people 'in the system' and 500 new patients a year!
From Dr Susan Schonfield's presentation: GRS for London Residents: 03/04 04/05 05/06 06/07 MtF 30 19 20 20 FtM 27 19 11 32 So no apparent pattern. Susan did say that the UK team were still working through a backlog. FTM surgery being £54K was I believe resisted for a while so the backlog was caused. I have asked for clarification of the above figure, as to what it covers. * they are still purchasing FTM lower surgery privately. eg:- they are still using NHS money to pay for Private purchasing from the same team that does the work on the NHS. They are yearly: The financial year over here runs from April to March end, hence the years are: MtF FtM 2003/2004 30 27 2004/2005 19 19 2005/2006 20 11 2006/2007 20 32 We are now in the year 2007/2008 The UK financial year is different to ours in Australia. Ours runs from July to June This is the approximate price for lower surgery in the UK from the only two surgeons in the UK who form the UK FTM lower surgery team. This includes usually about 4-5 operations over 2-3 years (although it has been known to stretch to many more years and many more operations) the additional operations being repairs and revisions. So in theory: Phalloplasty (which is either taken from the arm or abdomen) with approx 2-3 weeks in hospital Labial Urethroplasty -creating the urethra within the phallus if phallo produced from abdomen, or Join up urethroplasty- if phallo produced from Arm, then there is the testicular prostheses operation and glans shaping of the head and lastly the implant of the erectile penile prostheses. In addition to this they often do the hysterectomy at one of the first two stages. And very occasionally (they prefer not to do it and they've done it less than 8 times I believe) is the vaginectomy. They usually close it up a bit but then you still end up with vaginal lubricant. YUCK! This is why I'm determined to go to Belgium - I dont' want wet testicles,. TMI? probably. Another interesting statistic Dr Lorimer came out with was that out of all the patients/clients only 80% complete transition ( in social terms- not necessarily do all the GRS ) I'm surprised it's that low. Maybe the other 20% are just slower getting there. It was an empty statistic with no time references so perhaps not very useful.
