A Letter about the Living Library Project

Mon - 16/04/2007

ABC RADIO 612 AM -  Spencer Howson Morning Show.

On the morning of Friday the 27th of April 2007, I will be on the Morning show at about 6.20am.

We will be discussing the “Living Library” that will be launched on the 18th and 19th of May. The idea of this radio interview is to make people aware that we are having a rehearsal on Sunday the 29th of April 2007 and it is open to the general public.

The three meetings will all be held at the Brisbane Central Library in Brisbane Square. The first on the 29th April from Noon until 2.30pm. The two in May will be from 10.30am until 2.30pm.

Every one is welcome to come along -  Kathy

The Brisbane Living Library will host its “Dummy Run” on Sunday the 29th of April 2007 between the hours of Noon and 2.30pm. It will be held at the Central Library in Brisbane Square. This Library will also host the Official Launch of the Living Library on Friday and Saturday the 18th and 19th of May 2007. The times for both days are between 10.30am until 2.30pm.

It will be interesting from my standpoint as a “Living Book” to observe how well we and the “Readers” interact. I can only see this as a great tool in the fight against non understanding of people’s circumstances and against discrimination. Education is a great weapon in this fight for human rights and dignity.

I would like to draw your attention to the following statement by Terry Davis—Secretary General of The Council of Europe.

“Human rights cannot be implemented through legal process alone. That is why the Council of Europe also works to inspire civil society and public authorities who promote human rights worldwide to prevent injustice, oppression and discrimination.

I sincerely hope to see many of you there.

On Wednesday the 21st of February 2007 I attended the inaugural launch of the “Living Library” in Brisbane’s Central Library.

The “Living Library” is a program in which people of varying backgrounds become “Living Books” and make themselves available to meet with “Readers” on a particular day as advertised as the “Living Library” day, at a particular Library.

The inaugural meeting was to decide how this was to be implemented, as the first meeting will be at the Brisbane Square Central Library, with others to follow at other Brisbane City Council Libraries through out their system. The date is still to be fixed.

We had members of the Lismore Library in attendance to tell us how they set this up, as their venture is the first in Australia. They commenced their “Living Library” in November 2006 and currently report that it is building in interest.

From my perspective, I believe that any thing that we can do to promote understanding of Transsexualism, is a must. I have held my hand up to be on both the committee and a “Living Book” I was invited by the Lismore Library to attend as a “Guest Book” and will consider this in the near future.

It does not only cater for a one on one meeting, but could have more people as “Readers if OK by the “Living Book” I see this as a very useful adjunct to helping schools and classes form some understanding of Transsexual people.
