Archbishop of Canterbury – No Mention of TS Issues? Correspondence –Re: The Archbishop of Canterbury’s Announcement
-----Original Message----- From: Kathy Noble Sent: Thursday, March 29, 2007 7:37 PM To: 'Anglican Communion News Service'; 'bishopty@keypoint.com.au' Subject: RE: ACNS4272 Archbishop of Canterbury - Church must be 'safe place' for gay and lesbian people
Dear Sir I would like to raise the question of the even smaller community, that is the World of the Transsexual. We are seemingly the forgotten, or as we are very often told, placed in the too hard basket. We are well aware of the problems faced by the Gay and Lesbian community, and I certainly am, as I serve on the Board of a group that is trying to help in the entire GLBTI community, from the standpoint of Health. My concern is that we in the Transsexual community are in an even more invidious situation, and our people suffer many forms of humiliation, discrimination, frustration, depression and a very high incidence of suicide, both attempted and achieved. Murder is no stranger to our community, so we hold a minutes silence each November, in memory of those that have suffered this fate. These are World wide problems, and many of our problems are never even encountered by the Gay and Lesbian community! I wish to ask, why are we not considered? Are we such abominations that the Church will have nothing to do with us, and just hope that we disappear! Sorry if I appear to rant on, but I have to deal with this situation many times. The people concerned can be from 5 years old, up to 70 plus and they all feel very left out in the cold. I have just had a 20 month fight with the UK government, in order that we outside of UK, but born there can receive our amended Birth Certificate. That is but one item that the Gays and Lesbians do not have to face, and there are many, many more. Love and Peace, Kathy Anne Noble

Dear Kathy Noble, Personally it is important for me to say to you that you are never to see yourself anymore or anyless that a child of God. Apart from the way you see yourself physically, yet in another way, you are like me a "unique person". And further I am always aware that God gives me a will to glorify him and for me to respect myself and others. Nothing can stop me doing this. I am told to love all men, but I find that I am not loved by everyone, but I believe that it could often be the other's problem. Of course the poet says that none of us was created to be an island. so we do learn to group and relate to others with whom we can grow and mature like human beings. I am sure that you have had long discussions which many people, but can I suggest that you do identify your real friends and learn to break new ground with what ever problem that you have shared with each other. Never be a lonely person.. Never would I give the impression that I am not listening to what you have "said", in fact I can hear a lot of hurt and anger but over which I have no control. Such as road rage, or a family dispute an outsider has little help to offer.. I would never walk away from you as a person, and I would remain available until I feel that I could do no more. I have tried to reply to your email very briefly, and I hope that it has not been totally irrelevant. Write again and I promise that I will keep listening. Sincerely George Tung Yep
Dear Bishop George Tung Yep, Thank you for your very kind words. Please do not be offended by what I write. My Transsexual (TS) community World wide suffers from being “Unique” but are vastly misunderstood. Many of us are forced ( by prejudiced opinions ) to lose not just our loved ones, house, employment and roof, but are also denied our spiritual needs! We are in many cases barred from Church and are also denied being able to marry in Church due to our being TS. This occurs even after being recognised in our true gender, via an amended Birth Certificate (BC). This has come about in the UK after the Gender Recognition Act 2004, which granted the right to this. I was born in the UK, but now reside in Brisbane, Australia, so had to fight for this right to receive my amended BC. This is a condition that we are born with, and many of us consider it to be a curse until we are corrected and assume our true self! We certainly did not ask to be TS, it is there from our time in the womb and the only way it can be corrected, is by surgery (Sex Re-assignment Surgery, SRS) in order to fetch the mind and body into congruity. I have many friends within the TS community and everyday society. I am not alone, as I work for the good of the TS community via lecturing, lobbying and advocacy, in order to have us recognised as part of humanity, the part between Male and Female, of which there are many derivatives! The “Hurt and Anger” that you read into my mail, is in many ways justified. It is directed at the Church, per se, but we are differentiated in many areas of the “Normal Community” as they do not, or cannot, or wish not, to understand us. Equally, it is hard for our families to watch their Son become their Daughter, or their Daughter become their Son. It affects not just the partner, but children of the marriage. Yes, many of us do marry and sire, or give birth to children before we fully realise that our TS condition will mean in the end that we submit to its very insistent call for harmony amid body, mind, heart and soul. Our condition is a recognised ‘biological’ pre-natal medical condition, and not a mental aberration, nor a disease to be ‘cured’, nor a turpitude to be ‘purified or exonerated.’ Centuries of outdated speculation is hard to move when it’s been entrenched as ‘fact’ for so long. At present, we are trying World wide to illumine the past conjecture about us, with true knowledge of our condition, to alter the way we are looked upon. To achieve this, we have to talk to Governments, Medical Professionals, and yes, the Church. Would it be too much to ask that the Church and the Arch Bishop consider our plight? Many feel sadly let down, as they can no longer follow, or engage in their “Faith” Love and Peace, Kathy Anne Noble - Mon-02/04/2007

Love and Peace, Kathy Anne Noble Dear Kathy I was pleased to receive your letter as it explains some of the things which you have had to endure. I am sending out feelers but I suspect that many in "authority" will be very guarded in how they will reply, but on the other hand there are many ways "of plucking a duck". (I wonder if you are old enough to have ever plucked a duck?). Do have a joyful Easter especially in the promise of God's Love and the promise of Eternal Life. +George Tung Yep

Dear George, I would say that I definitely am old enough. I lived through the Blitz of London and have recently celebrated my 72nd birthday. I thank you for even attempting to put out feelers, as I do understand that many will shy away from our problem. We are unfortunately all too aware of this happening, due to our dealings with the Medical professionals and Government departments. Currently, we are awaiting the full report from the UK for the Royal College of Psychiatrists and also a draft report from the American Psychologists Association on matters that impact greatly on our community. At my age, my input is in the hope that those who are still to come will have an easier route to becoming their true selves. Thank you for your wishes for Easter, and I hope that you too will have a happy and joyous Easter. Love and peace, Kathy - Mon-02/04/2007
