It is interesting that some people have been upset by the title – indeed I was originally upset by it too, and fought hard to have it changed…but to no avail! I don’t see ‘transsexuality’ as a disorder at all…but after reading the book I realised (perhaps, like you) that the word ‘disorder’ is used to describe anything which a patient feels isn’t the way they were ‘meant to be’. In this case, ‘disorder’ is fine. Perhaps if more people understood this use of the term, in this instance, they’d feel happy about it being used in the book’s title. I have worked with James Barrett for about 12 months on this book and I find him to be a very personable chap who is quite certain that his book will help patients and health professionals work together in a cohesive effective way. He’s very definitely trying to help, rather than hinder, and feels passionately about the cause.
